March 2017 Chairman’s Note

We are halfway to summer and the SAE board members are working hard to make sure our tour schedule stays busy. Speaking of that, we’ve just finished a fantastic tour that Wayne Richter worked long and hard with the great team at Generac to make happen. I expect everyone that attended had a great time because I know I did and the Generac Team pulled out all the stops for us (the tour bus ride sure made things easy!). For those that couldn’t or didn’t make it I would encourage you to sign up early for the future tours.

For those that have been around awhile it is a common request asking for volunteers to join the board. We understand that this can be intimidating, but don’t fear – we are a pretty friendly bunch and welcome helping hands or at least the moral support. Some areas where we are constantly looking for help are the SAE Baja program and the STEM/AWIM programs. Most are probably familiar with the Baja program and those of you that who been around awhile probably remember this chapter regularly hosting a Baja event. We would like to do that again and need a group of people to take on the planning of this event. STEM/AWIM are educational programs for primary schools to help teach the subjects that support a future engineering career path. Feel free to email or talk to one of the board members about how you can contribute to the engineering community.

I hope to see many of our members as we share a joint meeting April 12th with ASME at the UW Engine Research Center in Madison.

Regards,

Van Phifer

October 2016 Chairman’s Note

SAE Milwaukee Section Members and Friends,

Well, I’ve started my first year as SAE Chairperson. As we did at our first meeting I’d like to recognize Garrett Herning for his three years as Chairperson as he passed the torch to me and he’s moved on to a new role as our treasurer and project manager. Thanks Garrett for the prior and continued service!

Our first meeting was sponsored by Modine where members were provided a great meal by Modine and given a great presentation by Scott Wollenberg and Kyle Schultz. Thanks to Mitch Crawford and Drew Boyer for putting this great event together. Finally, I’d also like to recognize the great group of tour guides in Dusty Flunker, Drew Boyer, Kyle Schultz, Josh Cassavoy, and Rob Runte.

This month I won’t be available for the October Meeting at Milwaukee Tool, but I’m sure the team there will have a fantastic tour and presentation for the membership. Milwaukee tool has an impressive facility and I’m positive the event that they are sponsoring will be a knockout.

In November we will have our annual Student Night, where for the first time we have a sponsor that will be presenting after the student presentations. I’ve had a peek at what B83 is bringing and expect it will be very interesting to students and professionals alike!

Student night will showcase the student vehicles and let them compete for the sponsorship money we have allocated for them. Last year we had 5 schools and over 70 students in attendance. They did an incredible job and we expect a repeat performance this year. If you have never been to a student night, it’s not just for students. This is a wonderful networking event as well as a way to give guidance and feedback to some up and coming engineers who will be joining us in industry in the next few years.

As a section we have several new officers in place and have several initiatives we are working on this year. Some of these are engaging middle school and high school kids to a career in engineering, engaging our members through events and tours, and supporting the six engineering colleges in our area in the SAE Colligate Design series.

Hopefully you’ve read this far as this is very important; this SAE section works because of volunteers! The board is always looking to get the word about SAE out and needs additional volunteers to help with special projects, long term SAE initiatives and shadow opportunities to help with continuity. If you have some time to give, please contact any of the board members or drop me an email below and we will help connect you with an opportunity that matches your interests.

I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event.

May 2016 Chairman’s Note

Greetings SAE Milwaukee Section Members and Friends,

Summer feels like it is in full swing. The grass is green, sunny days are here, and we are wrapping up our SAE year with our final event at EPIC outside of Madison.

We still have a few events over the summer so please take a look at the website and join us. In Early June we will be having our Annual “Nine and Dine” Milwaukee Section Golf outing. We’ve been lucky to have great weather for this event the last couple years, so once again plan on joining us. As we have done in years past, we are offering our discounted June Sprints tickets to Road America. Come see the SCCA races at one of America’s premier race tracks. Our Student Sections will have their project vehicles on display and will be available to talk about the hard work they put into these for various SAE competitions around the United States. Lastly, we will be having our 3rd annual SAE Milwaukee Section Car Show in July. Bring your favorite ride out and join us for an evening of peaking under the hood and possibly true stories.

I want to give recognition to our last three event hosts, Midwest Composites, Signicast, and Ariens Company. All of these companies sponsored their respective section meeting, which contributes significantly to our operating budget and our ability to give back to our membership and the student sections. Thank you very much for your support. Lastly I want to recognize the hard work our Company Ambassador Chairman Wayne Richter did on organizing the Ariens event. We had a record of 95 in attendance way up in Brillion, WI. The event went smoothly and everyone had a great time. Thanks Wayne!

April 2016 Chairman’s Note

Greetings SAE Milwaukee Section Members and Friends,

Spring has arrived in central and southern WI and it was a rather warm journey up to Houghton MI to the annual SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge. The warm conditions did make things more of a challenge for the students with it being icy early in the day and then slushy as the competition went on, but there was just enough snow to complete all the events. There was a great atmosphere at the competition with many successes and learning experiences for the twenty plus student teams that attended this year. Industry support was also strong this year and the Milwaukee Section hosted the Thursday evening meeting for all the student teams attending the competition. Jay Meldrum, Brian Hannon, and their team put on another great competition this year.

As we head into summer the Milwaukee SAE section is also looking for a few people to help out on next year’s Board of Directors. Every May all positons are open for reelection and we have a couple spots opening up for those who would like to volunteer. It is a great way to gain leadership experience and give back to a worthwhile organization. Please see any current board member at an upcoming meeting or e-mail any of us to inquire about how you can become involved.

This month we will be at Ariens Company in Brillion WI. It has been several years since we’ve been to Ariens and they are very excited to have us back again. They have a great tour and presentation set up for us and this meeting will definitely be worth the short trip to Brillion. I look forward to seeing all of you at the meeting on April 20th.

Hello SAE Milwaukee Section Members and Friends,

Fall is in full swing and it won’t be too long until the busy Holiday season and the possibility of that familiar white stuff on the ground.

For November we will be having our annual Student Night, where we showcase the student vehicles and let them compete for the sponsorship money we have allocated for them. Last year we had 5 schools and over 70 students in attendance. This year we expect an equally large turnout by the students. If you have never been to a student night, it’s not just for students, and I encourage you to join us. Up-and-coming engineers are what keep our SAE Section, profession, industry, and country strong. Please come out and support these young engineers and see what they have been busy working on. This is a great opportunity to network with industry and college faculty who support our section.

As a section we have several initiatives we are working on this year.

The first is our STEM/AWIM initiative to help introduce middle school and high school students to engineering. If you would like to volunteer to help a local school or if your children’s school would like to get a program going, please contact any board member and we can help connect the dots.

Our second initiative is our shadow program. We are always looking to keep our section strong and plan the best events possible. Please consider becoming involved in our leadership team. We can accommodate your needs if you like to become a board member or just help plan a monthly event. With our shadow program we pair you up with a board member and you shadow them through the process. Please talk to any of the current board members about the spot we have for YOU!

I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event.

September 2015 Chairman’s Note

Hello SAE Milwaukee Section Members and Friends,

The kids have returned to school and we can see the leaves are beginning to show a color here and there, signaling that fall is here. I hope your Labor Day weekend was enjoyable.

We started off the SAE year with our first event at Wacker-Neuson. They showed us the utmost hospitality and did not disappoint on the tour, dinner, and presentation. If you missed it, you missed out. They also sponsored the meal for the evening, so I’d like to recognize them as this not only helps strengthen our section, but our student sections as well.

This month we will be at MacLean-Fogg. Maclean-Fogg has been very involved in SAE being a large sponsor of the Clean Snow Challenge. This month they are going to take us into their manufacturing facility and let us participate in the innovation process they use from a concept a customer bring them, to a finished product that they deliver. This is going to be an exciting exercise for student and veteran engineers alike, so be sure to keep this on your calendars.

I hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer and enjoying the beautiful days we have had the last few weeks. With fall just around the corner, we are getting ready to kick off a new SAE year of events. We have a dynamite schedule of events in the works for this year.

Wacker-Neuson is hosting our first event for this year and has a program planned that you do not want to miss. A worldwide manufacturer of lightweight and compact equipment with engineering and manufacturing in Menomonee Falls. Come hear about the company history, their facilities, and what innovation separates them from others in their industry.

On August 23rd we will be holding our second annual Cruise In, so get out your favorite ride and meet us at HB Performance where we will then “cruise” up to Sheboygan for the Kettle Moraine Corvette Club’s 30th annual Custom Car Show. There will be plenty of food, music, cars, trucks, bikes, and fun.

We are still actively looking for members interested in helping on the Governing Board. Our Shadow program lets you “shadow” a board member and contribute to the section. Help us continue to build and grow the Milwaukee SAE Section. We have plenty of opportunities to help you get involved and grow your leadership skills.

Lastly we are working to develop our AWIM program. AWIM stands for A World In Motion and is a way to help expose middle school and high school students to the engineering field. Somewhere along the way someone pointed you on the path to Engineering, do that same thing for another youth by contacting our AWIM chair to see the opportunities we have available.
