May 2015 Chairman’s Note

Greetings Milwaukee SAE Section members and friends,

Summer is just around the corner and our meeting at Falk will be the last monthly tour/speaker event for the SAE year. It has been an enjoyable year and I hope you enjoyed the events.

Upcoming for the summer months will be our annual Golf Outing, special priced SAE tickets to the June Sprints at Road America, and our 2nd annual cruise night. These are great social activities where you can bring your friends and co-workers along to see what SAE is all about.

The year may be coming to a close, but next year will be here soon and that means the SAE Milwaukee Section is looking for your help! We have two great opportunities for you to help grow your leadership skills and help keep our section active and continue to be the premier engineering society in the area.

The first is our Shadow Program. Are you interested in what being a board member entails? Volunteer to be a shadow and we will pair you up with a board member. You can see what this board member does and help them with some of their tasks through the year. This is a great way to get involved and see what helping out with the Milwaukee SAE Section is all about. Please contact Randy Hoffman for more information.

The second opportunity is our AWIM/STEM initiative. Please consider volunteering to help bring engineering into the classroom for middle and high school students. Did someone spark your interest as a child that led you to a path in engineering? Maybe you can do the same for a young person. This is a great way to have an impact and promote the engineering discipline. Please contact Sid Jain for more information.

I look forward to seeing you at our Falk Event or one of our upcoming summer social events!

April 2015 Chairman’s Note

Greetings Milwaukee SAE Section members and friends,

Spring is here and we are closing in on the end of the SAE year, but don’t worry we still have some top notch events on our schedule.

This month we will be at Uptown Ford to get an up close and personal look at Ford’s new F-150 with the aluminum body. There is a lot of buzz in the industry about this vehicle and this will be your chance to see what the buzz is about and what this means from a design perspective.

February 2015 Chairman’s Note

Greetings Milwaukee SAE Section members and friends,

The days are starting to get longer which mean spring is right around the corner. While many of us are dreaming of spring already, if you’d like to give winter a proper send off, consider taking the ride up to the Keweenaw Research Center and join SAE at the Clean Snowmobile Challenge on March 2-7. Taking a few days to see what the competition is all about, talking with students, and networking with industry is a great way to celebrate the last few weeks of winter.

This month is our annual joint meeting with the Milwaukee Section of ASME at Case New Holland. This is another great event where to network with other professionals in our field. Please join us on March 11th.

December 2014 Chairman’s Note

Greetings SAE Milwaukee Section Members and Friends,

As 2014 winds down, I’d like to thank all of you who attended events this fall. We had a great start to our 2014/2015 year with top notch events at Harley-Davidson and Manitowoc Cranes. Both of these companies sponsored their event which was key for the Student Section Awards given out at the annual Student Night in November.

Both of these companies sponsored their event which was key for the Student Section Awards given out at the annual Student Night in November.

We had record attendance from the student sections at Student Night. Five out of the six schools in our area were in attendance showing off their project vehicles and competing in the annual oral presentation contest. If you have never been to a Student Night, please consider coming next year. Not only is this a chance to see the innovation and hard work the students are doing to their project vehicles, but this is a great networking opportunity with potential co-op and graduating students on job opportunities your company may have available.

We start off 2015 with a strong lineup of events in January. Cure the winter blue’s with other SAE members and take a ride over to the Matt Kenseth museum in January. After that be sure to join us for events at Milsco, Case New Holland, and the Clean Snow Challenge.

Lastly, on behalf of the entire SAE Milwaukee Section Governing Board, I would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Holiday Season. We look forward to seeing you in 2015!

October 2014 Chairman’s Note

Hello SAE Milwaukee Section and Friends,

With the days getting shorter and the leaves turning colors, it can only mean one thing. It’s almost time for our annual Student Night. If you have never attended a student night, take the opportunity this year to see how the Milwaukee SAE Section supports the six Student Chapters in our area. In addition to seeing all the schools display their project vehicles, each chapter will be giving a presentation and we need people from industry to help judge these presentations. It’s a great experience interacting with the students, sharing stories, and being able to give advice and mentorship as they begin looking out to the world that exists after college.

After Student Night the Milwaukee SAE Section will take a break for the Holidays. The Holidays can be hectic, but I hope everyone gets a chance to spend some quality time with loved ones and enjoy the season. Take some time to reflect on 2014 and get ready for an exciting 2015. We have a great lineup of events for 2015. Keep an eye on your mailbox in the new year as I hope to see all of you at an upcoming meeting.

Thank you.

September 2014 Chairman’s Note

Hello SAE Milwaukee Section Members and Friends,

As the temperature outside has cooled off, I think that we are all hoping for a few more weeks of warmer weather. The cool winds of fall may be blowing into Southern Wisconsin, but that has not stopped the SAE Milwaukee Section for putting together a fantastic lineup of fall events for you.

As the temperature outside has cooled off, I think that we are all hoping for a few more weeks of warmer weather. The cool winds of fall may be blowing into Southern Wisconsin, but that has not stopped the SAE Milwaukee Section for putting together a fantastic lineup of fall events for you.

This month we will be visiting Manitowoc Cranes, which has been on our radar for few years now. The people at Manitowoc Cranes have put together an extensive tour and a great presentation on their new MLC300 and MLC650 cranes. This is an event you will not want to miss. Please be sure to register early as space is limited. As a bonus, we will have Brian Hannon from MTU to give us a brief summary of the Clean Snowmobile Challenge. If you have wondered exactly what the Clean Snow Challenge is, ways you can get involved, and what northern Michigan has to offer in March, then this is your chance to find out.

In November we will once again be having our annual Student Night. All our student sections will be at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee this year to show off the project vehicles they have been working on and to compete for our annual student section awards. Please join us for an evening seeing what innovative design ideas the student sections have come up with. After the November meeting, the SAE Milwaukee Section will be on hiatus until after the New Year, but don’t fret as we have a list of great events planned for 2015.

I hope to see you all at an upcoming event!

August 2014 Chairman’s Note

Greetings Milwaukee SAE Section,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. As August winds down, school will be starting soon and fall is just around the corner. The end of summer also signals the beginning of the 2014-15 SAE year. The Governing Board has been hard at work putting together another great year of programming.

We start off this year in September with Harley-Davidson, taking an inside look at the new Street 500 and 750 bikes with the added bonus of the Project LiveWire motorcycles. Harley-Davidson has put together a top notch evening for us and this will definitely be a great kickoff to the year so please plan to join us.

In October we are going to be at Manitowoc Crane. This has been on the request list for a while and we’ve been able to schedule this for early October when the weather will be nice and they are putting together a great event for us. Be sure to keep an eye out for details in the next newsletter.

November will be our Annual Student Night. This is a great way to see the project vehicles that each student section is working on and talk with the students themselves about their designs and projects.

With the exciting lineup we have for this year I hope to see each of you at an upcoming event.

May 2014 Chairman’s Note

Greetings Milwaukee SAE Section Members and Friends,

Summer is quickly approaching as we are coming up on the last few events for the SAE calendar year. I’d like to thank all of you who attended our events this year. We’ve seen a steady increase in attendance this year with well over 100 members at the Mercury Marine and Trek events. I’d also like to thank all of our sponsors who hosted events or helped us as a section. This is a big part of what makes the Milwaukee SAE section recognized as one of the top SAE sections worldwide.

Our last meeting will be at Caterpillar in South Milwaukee on June 3rd. We have an excellent tour and talk planned and the museum will be open in between so please come join us for Caterpillar’s hospitality.

On June 4th will be our Second Annual golf outing. This is a great networking opportunity as well as a great way to support our student sections. This is filling up quickly, so if you have not registered as of yet, please see the registration link on the SAE Milwaukee website.

On July 9th we have a Cruise Night planned. Bring out a classic car, hot rod, motorcycle or your favorite performance vehicle to display and share an evening of with some of your fellow SAE members. HB Performance Systems has graciously offered their location for use. Please mark this on your calendar.

Lastly, we are already planning our events for next year. If you have an interest in getting involved on the Governing Board, please contact any board member. This is a great organization and we always welcome any member who would like to get more involved.

Have a great summer!

April 2014 Chairman’s Note

Greetings SAE Milwaukee Section Members and Friends!

The warmer weather is here and so is Spring! To say goodbye to winter several of us on the board attended the annual Clean Snowmobile Challenge at Michigan Technical University. It was a great competition this year and it really is amazing to see all the hard work and innovation the students put into these sleds. Add the six plus feet of snow on the ground and it is indeed a great way to see winter off. I invite everyone to consider making a trip up next year and see the competition and network with industry while enjoying the winter snow and the surrounding area.

This month we will welcome Spring with an exclusive tour and talk at Trek Bicycles. I cannot think of a more fitting meeting to get us all excited about spring and thinking of hitting the pavement and trails on a bicycle. Trek has done an excellent job on this meeting and it will be one you will not want to miss. Please register and join us there in a few weeks.

Lastly, to get everyone ready for Summer will be our 2nd Annual SAE Milwaukee Golf outing coming up on June 4th. This is a great way to help our section support the student sections, network, and enjoy a day of golf on a beautiful June day. All skill levels welcome, so no need to be a professional golfer to have a great time. Please head over to the SAE Milwaukee website and register.

I look forward to seeing you all at an upcoming event.
